A salary of AED 15,000 is often the first thing employees check when considering the UAE Green Visa for skilled employees. But the application also depends on your occupation, qualification and employment records.

If you work for a company in Masdar City Free Zone, start by asking HR for the documents already on file. A recent promotion, a pay rise or an old contract can leave details that need clarifying before you apply.

Masdar City Free Zone does not issue or approve the Green Visa. For an Abu Dhabi application, the relevant immigration authority is the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, usually called ICP.

What is the UAE Green Visa?

Green Residence is a renewable, five-year UAE residence category that does not require a UAE sponsor. Skilled workers are one of its eligible groups. Other groups have different criteria, so an employee should use the skilled-worker route rather than the freelancer or investor requirements. ICP Green Residence guide

Self-sponsored residence does not remove employment regulations. Before changing employers, taking additional work or starting a business, check the work permits and licences required for that activity.

Who qualifies for the UAE Green Visa for skilled employees?

The main eligibility checks are:

  • A valid UAE employment contract and the required work authorisation.
  • An occupation within levels 1, 2 or 3 of the classification approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, or MOHRE.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • A monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 or its equivalent.

These conditions work together. Meeting the salary threshold does not replace the education or occupational requirements. Articles 42 and 43 of the UAE residence regulations set out the skilled-worker route. UAE residence regulations

Check the occupation recorded on your documents

Ask HR which occupation and classification appear on your official employment records. An internal title such as “senior consultant” is not enough to establish a particular skill level.

If you were promoted recently, compare the new role with the contract and permit on file. Resolve outdated information through the proper process before relying on it in an application.

Confirm how your salary will be assessed

ICP’s public Green Residence guide states a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000. It does not explain on that page how every combination of basic pay, allowances and variable earnings is assessed. Do not assume a bonus or commission will make up a shortfall. Ask ICP which salary components and evidence it accepts for your case. ICP salary requirements

Check the qualification requirements early

Find your degree certificate before booking other appointments. Ask whether your qualification needs attestation, recognition, verification or a certified translation. These are different procedures; completing one does not necessarily complete the others.

Can Masdar City Free Zone employees apply?

Employment with a free-zone company does not, by itself, establish or rule out eligibility. The application still needs to meet the skilled-worker requirements.

Your employment authority also affects the paperwork. Do not assume every free-zone employee must produce exactly the same MOHRE document as a mainland employee. Ask HR and ICP to confirm the accepted contract, work authorisation and employment evidence for your employer’s category.

For example, an engineer whose role has changed should check the occupation recorded on the employment documents, even if the new job title seems to fit. The same check applies to employees in technology, energy, research and professional services.

Green Visa vs standard employment residence

Point to compare Standard employer-sponsored residence Skilled-employee Green Residence
Residence sponsorship Linked to the sponsoring employer Self-sponsored
Duration Depends on the applicable permit and rules Five years, renewable subject to requirements
Application basis Employer-sponsored employment route Separate skilled-worker eligibility assessment
Employment changes Check cancellation, transfer and new-permit procedures Check continuing eligibility and required work authorisation
Family residence Subject to the applicable sponsorship conditions Subject to the Green Residence family rules

A longer residence period can be useful if you are planning several years in the UAE. Whether switching makes sense also depends on costs, family arrangements and your current permit. Discuss those details before cancelling anything. ICP Green Residence overview

Family sponsorship and grace periods

Green Residence holders can sponsor eligible family members, subject to the relevant conditions. ICP also identifies first-degree relatives within the applicable family-residence provisions. Confirm the requirements separately for each relative rather than treating the employee’s approval as a family approval. ICP residence services

UAE guidance describes grace periods of up to six months after residence cancellation or expiry, depending on the category. Check the deadline recorded for your own permit with ICP. A grace period should not be treated as permission to work without the required authorisation. UAE Government residence guidance

Documents to prepare

Use this as a preparation list. The document checklist attached to your selected ICP application is the one to follow.

Document What to check before submission
Passport Validity of at least six months; clear, complete copy
Personal photograph Current image meeting the application specifications
Employment contract Correct employer, role and current terms
Work permit or other accepted employment evidence Appropriate to the employer’s regulatory category
Salary certificate Current figures consistent with the employment records
Degree certificate Required attestation, verification or translation completed
Salary-payment evidence, if requested Deposits and explanations consistent with payroll records
Current residence and Emirates ID, if applicable Correct details and upcoming expiry dates
Medical fitness and insurance documents Requirements and submission stage confirmed for your case

ICP publishes passport, photo and category-specific employment-document requirements through its residence service. Medical and identity procedures form part of completing residence formalities. ICP residence application documents

Keep a separate folder for documents that need correction. If the name on your degree differs from your passport, ask which supporting evidence will resolve it. Have the issuing organisation correct errors rather than altering a scan.

There is no universal bank-statement period specified in the Green Residence overview reviewed for this article. If statements are requested, obtain the period and format required for your application.

How to apply for a Green Visa in Abu Dhabi

The sequence below is a planning guide. ICP may arrange or combine stages differently depending on whether you are outside the UAE, already resident or changing status.

Eligibility check → HR records → qualification and salary evidence → ICP application → entry or status procedures, if required → medical fitness and Emirates ID formalities → residence issuance

1. Confirm the application category

Check that the skilled-worker route fits your employment circumstances. If a requirement is unclear, seek clarification before paying for application support or document services.

2. Ask HR to check your records

Request the current contract and the relevant employment or work-permit records. Ask who will handle corrections if the role, salary or employer details are outdated.

For free-zone employment, confirm which authority holds the records and which documents it can issue.

3. Prepare the academic documents

Check the required treatment of your degree with the receiving authority. If you need documents from an overseas institution, start that request early.

Keep legible copies of the certificate and any supporting verification. Avoid uploading only part of an attested document.

4. Prepare salary evidence

Compare the contract with the salary certificate. If ICP asks for payment records and the figures differ, obtain an accurate explanation from payroll.

Reimbursements, deductions or a recent pay rise can make records harder to compare. Ask what evidence is needed rather than assuming the application reviewer will infer the reason.

5. Use the appropriate ICP channel

For Abu Dhabi, start through ICP’s official website or app and confirm the correct Green Residence service. Dubai has a separate immigration service channel through GDRFA Dubai, so instructions for a Dubai application should not automatically be copied.

Keep your application reference and check requests for additional information. ICP Smart Services and GDRFA Dubai

6. Complete entry or status procedures where required

An applicant outside the UAE may need an entry-permit stage. Someone already in the country may need cancellation or status-adjustment procedures.

Before taking either route, ask ICP which sequence applies to your existing status. An application receipt or initial approval is not the same as a final residence permit.

7. Complete medical fitness screening

Follow the medical-fitness instructions for your residence application. Use a centre approved for the relevant Abu Dhabi screening service, and confirm the documents and appointment arrangements before visiting. Department of Health Abu Dhabi visa-screening standard

8. Complete Emirates ID requirements

Follow the linked identity application instructions, including biometrics if requested. Check the delivery address and contact number carefully.

An existing Emirates ID does not mean you should ignore new instructions attached to a change of residence category.

9. Check the issued residence details

Review your name, passport number, category and validity dates after issuance. Save the approval and payment records.

Check the status of the Emirates ID application separately, and deal with any family applications through their own required process.

UAE Green Visa fees in Abu Dhabi

ICP’s residence service lists the following Green Residence charges:

Published fee item Amount
Application AED 100
Green Residence issuance AED 100 per year
Smart services AED 100

For five years, those listed items add up to AED 700. This is a calculation of the published residence-service components, not an all-inclusive application quote. Confirm the amount shown for your selected service before paying. ICP published fees

Budget separately for any required entry or status procedure, Emirates ID, medical screening, insurance, document attestation and translation. An optional agent or typing-service charge should also be identified separately.

Ask for an itemised estimate. A low advertised “visa fee” may cover only one transaction, and charges from another emirate’s service should not be presented as an Abu Dhabi package.

How long does the process take?

ICP lists two days as the completion duration for its residence-issuance service. That is a service-stage target, not a promise that you can prepare documents, complete all appointments and receive your Emirates ID within two days. ICP service duration

For planning, divide the process into stages:

Stage What to confirm
Employment and degree preparation Time needed by HR, the university and any attestation authority
Application review Whether the submitted file is complete or needs clarification
Medical screening Appointment availability and the provider’s result turnaround
Identity formalities Whether biometrics are required and the available appointment
Card delivery Delivery status after issuance

Avoid booking travel around an assumed completion date. Ask each provider for its current turnaround and leave room for a document query.

Document issues that can slow an application

The following are practical checks, not a ranking of official rejection reasons:

  • A contract still shows the role held before a promotion.
  • Salary evidence does not explain a recent change in pay.
  • A degree lacks the verification requested for the application.
  • Names or passport details differ across records.
  • A scan is cropped, blurred or missing an attestation page.
  • The occupational classification has not been confirmed.
  • An applicant overlooks a request for additional information.

Before submitting, ask someone else to compare the names, numbers and dates across the file. Check the final uploads too, especially if you have replaced an earlier version.

Switching from an existing employment visa

Do not cancel your current residence simply because you appear to meet the Green Visa criteria.

Ask ICP and your employer to confirm the required order for your case, including whether an eligibility assessment or initial approval is available before cancellation. Final issuance may require cancellation and a status change; do not assume you can hold both residence arrangements at once.

Also check the effect on sponsored dependants, insurance and any planned travel. Record the deadline for maintaining lawful status throughout the transition. UAE Government cancellation and residence guidance

Where Masdar City Free Zone support fits

Your employer’s HR team is the starting point for employment records. If company or free-zone documentation needs coordination, ask which support is available through the Masdar City ecosystem.

Ask your employer’s HR team which company-document coordination services are available for your application. Business support and federal residence approval are separate responsibilities.

Your pre-submission checklist

  • I have checked the skilled-worker requirements against my own records.
  • HR has confirmed the occupation and employment documents.
  • I have clarified any uncertainty about salary evidence.
  • My academic documents meet the requested requirements.
  • Names, dates and passport details match.
  • I have confirmed the application channel and itemised charges.
  • I understand any cancellation or status-change sequence.
  • I have checked the medical, insurance and Emirates ID instructions.
  • I have considered any effect on family residence.
  • I have saved the application reference and follow-up deadlines.

Ten questions to ask before applying

  1. Which official occupation is recorded for my role?
  2. What evidence confirms its classification?
  3. Which employment documents should my employer provide?
  4. How will my salary package be assessed?
  5. Does my degree need further attestation or verification?
  6. Which service should I select for my current immigration status?
  7. What does the quoted fee include and exclude?
  8. When, if at all, should I cancel my existing residence?
  9. How will the change affect my dependants?
  10. Who will respond if ICP requests another document?

Keep the answers with your application notes. An unresolved question about eligibility deserves attention before a payment or cancellation.

Frequently asked questions

What salary is required for a skilled-employee Green Visa?

Yes, subject to the family-sponsorship requirements. Each family member needs the appropriate application and supporting evidence.

The salary, duration and general family benefits above are set out in the ICP Green Residence guide.

Can a free-zone employee apply?

Check the skilled-worker criteria and the employment documents accepted for your employer’s category. Working in a free zone does not automatically qualify an applicant.

Does Masdar City Free Zone issue the visa?

No. ICP is the relevant immigration authority for an Abu Dhabi application; company-document support is a separate role.

Where should I apply in Abu Dhabi?

Start with ICP’s official service channels and confirm the service appropriate to your circumstances.

Which documents should I prepare?

Use the preparation table above, then follow the checklist attached to your actual application. Do not treat a general blog checklist as an exhaustive authority request.

What is the total cost?

There is no single all-inclusive total established here. The published residence-service components are only part of the budget; obtain an itemised estimate.

How long will the whole application take?

There is no verified end-to-end guarantee in this guide. Preparation, appointments, review and delivery have separate timings.

Should I cancel my current visa first?

Confirm the sequence with ICP and your employer before cancellation. Eligibility assumptions are not a substitute for approval.

Your next step

Before paying an application fee, resolve any uncertainty about your occupation, salary evidence or degree. If you already hold UAE residence, get the cancellation and status-change sequence confirmed as well.
